Eglise de la Miséricorde & Couvent des franciscains
Commonly referred to as the Church of the Monks, the Church of the Misericordia was built in 1848. The purpose of the building was to be able to accommodate more parishioners because the first church of the Santissima Cuncezzione, located in Scalu, the current district of the town hall, was becoming too small. Completed in 1854, the Church of the Miscecorde is dedicated to Our Lady of Miscecorde and adjoins the former Franciscan convent, hence its second name.
In 1853, the inhabitants of L'Île-Rousse expressed the desire to have a community of children from Saint-François. On this date, Pope Pius IX authorized the foundation of the Convent of the Minor Brothers of L'Île-Rousse. In 1855, these monks came to occupy their convent adjoining the Church of Our Lady of Mercy. The building was completed in 1854 and given over to worship in 1855. Thus was founded the Convent of the Franciscans in L'Île-Rousse. It remained for a time the only place of worship in the Paoline city. Closed to worship in 1968, since 2014 it has housed the private school of Notre-Dame.
Also known as the "monks' church", it was home to parishioners for a long time before becoming too small. Next door, we find the Notre-Dame private school.
