Rue Simon Varsi

Simon VARSI - Resistance fighter

1923 - 1944

Son of Jean, Augustin Varsi, president of the Bonifacio special dégation à la Lib´ration de la Corse, and Vincentine Comiti, Simon Varsi était élève in secondée d’architecture à l’école des Beaux-Arts de Paris.

As a sub-lieutenant in the Corps Franc de Défense de la France, his group had been organizing arms dépôts in the L’Isle forest. It was during a transport of equipment that Jean and Michel Reberteau, Clément Roche and Simon Varsi were intercepted on August 22, 1944 by a German patrol. It seems that their car broke down. The captives were interrogated and shot the next day. He was awarded the Medal of the Resistance posthumously and the Cross of War 1939-1945. Simon Varsi is buried in the marine cemetery of Bonifacio.

On August 30, 1944, the special delegation of Bonifacio took the following decision: considering that the name of Simon Varsi deserves to pass the post, decides that the street Casteletto will be named after Simon Varsi
