Rue des Pachas

Rue des Pachas

Pacha is an honorary title given to the representatives of the Administration in Egypt.
The Rue des Pachas owes its name to three Pachas:

  • Antoine-Marie Castelli-Bey (1845-1916) director of the European offices at the Ministry of Justice in Egypt and teacher at the Polytechnic School in Cairo.

  • Antoine-Marie Debernardi (1823-1893) a general in the Egyptian army who founded and directed the Egyptian Polytechnic School and built the fortifications of Alexandria.

  • Jean-Antoine Musso (1838-1899), deacon of the Nation in Cairo. He was very close to the Egyptian royal court (Mohamed Ali II) but also Ferdinand de Lesseps since he belonged to the Suez Canal Group.
