Tombe de Prosper Mérimée

Cannes

Prosper Mérim&e is a French writer, historian, and archaeologist of the first half of the nineteenth century. Mée illustrates himself in the narrative genre, more specifically in novels and short stories. His short stories, very well known, often play on exoticism: Corsica in Mateo Falcone and Colomba, Andalusia in Carmen, popularized a little later by the opera Carmen by Georges Bizet (1875).

The tomb of Prosper Mée is one of the remarkable funerary monuments of the cemetery of Grand Jas à Cannes. Suffering from asthma, Prosper Mérim&e died on September 23, 1870 around 11 pm during one of his many cures à Cannes. He is buried in the protestant cemetery of Grand Jas which was inaugurated in March 1866. The burial ground is located in the East End, 6th Avenue, No. 874. Their grave is plain and has no religious signs. The Tudor arch that crowns the stèle is a reminder of Prosper Mérimée's attachment to his British friend Frances Lagden (1796-1879) à England. Indeed, it was his friend who bought the concession on January 13, 1871, four months after the death. The latter is also buried in the tomb. The tomb of Prosper Mérimute;e has been registered as a Monuments Historiques by order of June 7, 2019.
