Quartier du Fortin

Quartier du Fortin

During the year 1792, the new city decided to protect itself by erecting an enclosure wall pierced by two gates: e Porte Suttane (Santa-Reparata gates), e Porte Suprane (Algajola gates). They were used as big barriers, where the octroi was paid. In 1833, it was decided to enlarge the city by removing the old walls in favor of other fortifications. Little by little, as new buildings were constructed, the city wall disappeared.

Today, the remains of the Fortin ramparts remain. The neighborhood was completely renovated in 1974 and remodeled in 2021.

In the past, Ile-Rousse was protected by a wall to ward off attacks. As the town grew, this wall was removed. Today, only the remains of these ramparts remain.
