Scalu / Marinella

Boulevard Charles-Marie Savelli

In order to trade, owners from Santa Reparata and Monticello built warehouses in Scalu at the beginning of the eighteenth century, which were later transformed into houses. The oldest known buildings of Scalu seem to be the tower (built around 1575) and the church of the Santissima Cuncezzione built in 1740 and demolished in 1936. The Marinella promenade runs along the eastern side of the Scalu, between the railway and the beach. It was built in 1982. Previously, until the 1960s, there were the railroad barriers. The main beach of the city is overlooked by this famous promenade.

Note a peculiarity of the territory: the beaches of L’Île-Rousse are urban beaches, as defined by the PADDUC (Plan for the Development and Sustainable Development of Corsica) because they are entirely located in the heart of the city, on the edge of the historic center and in the extension of the marina. In March 1976 the prud'homie of the fishermen of Balagne was created, allowing the structuring of the fishermen's activity in L'Ircirc;le-Rousse, to give it a legitimacy in front of the development of tourism and to give it a representation throughout Corsica.

This is the oldest neighborhood. There used to be a church at the children’s playground.
