Parking de l’ancienne chapelle Eglise des Capucins

Here, on the site of the Ancienne Chapelle parking lot, stood the church of the Pères Capucins convent. The Capuchin monks, who were fighting the plague and the fire, had been loaned to the Dominican monks, who had initially been seen by them. Their church was 32 meters long and 14 meters wide. It was 21 m high. The main door of this imposing religious building was surmounted by a crest bearing the coat of arms of Marseille's Bishop Henry de Belsunce, who had purchased and donated the land for its construction. Work began in 1737, and the church was consecrated in 1746.
Then, in 1792, the buildings were sold as Biens Nationaux, by public auction. For the sake of the population, the Auriolais consuls wanted the church. Private individuals bought the convent buildings and converted them into housing. You can see the string of dwellings that follow the convent's original layout around a square central courtyard, open to the sky... Four rows of roof slates, particularly rare in Auriol, testify to the building's age. If you walk along rue des Capucins, you'll see the original ashlar bases of the monastery's corner walls at the northern ends of the buildings
