La Caserne

Avenue David Dary

In 1763, Pascal Paoli had a house built in Scalu for the Corsican government à L’Île-Rousse. To protect his palace, he made in 1765 a battery just in front and ramparts. In 1769, in this barracks, still in improvement, the Count of Vaux installed his troops for the benefit of King Louis Quinze coming to establish militarily his hegemony in Corsica.

This palace became, at the beginning of the nineteenth century, the military barracks Ambert where the French staff of the military place of L’Île-Rousse and the lieutenancy of King Louis eighteen was located. Then, at the end of the July Monarchy, this building changed its function and became the headquarters of the battery facing the sea. In 1901, the municipality bought this barracks from the Domaines de l'Armée de Terre to settle there. Nowadays, only a part of the northern ramparts remains with its bastion called the Fortin.

This is the former palace of Pascal Paoli, the founder of L’Île-Rousse. Today, it is the building of the Town Hall.
