Avignon

Fontaine Wallace

These fountains date back to the 19th century, they were installed in French cities and around the world at the initiative of the philanthropist Richard Wallace. Originally, these fountains were used to provide drinking water to citizens. The one in Avignon is no longer in operation today. The four caryatids represent kindness, simplicity, charity and sobriety. These fountains were made by the Fonderie d'art Barbezat et Cie in the Val d'Osne in Haute-Marne, the sculptor Charles Auguste Le bourg was from Nantes.
