Their story.

Built in 1909, the Fish Market was decommissioned in 1975. The fish was already sold at the port of Saumaty, near Estaque. The works destined to transform the building into a theater started in 1979. The building was restored to its original state in 1979, and the faience and the large veranda were preserved. The national theater of Marseille, la Criée, was inaugurated on May 22, 1981. With its two theaters, its company and its programming, it is today one of the most successful in France.

It's a great place to be

Founded in 1981, La Criée, Théâtre national de Marseille, has a status of National Dramatic Center and has successively been directed by Marcel Maréchal, Gildas Bourdet, Jean-Louis Benoit and Macha Makeïeff.

Since July 1, 2022 La Criée has been directed by Robin Renucci, comedian and director. A large and welcoming theater, with its two performance halls, its lobby and its restaurant, open to the Old Port, La Criée is a place for creation, reflection, and the creation of new works;the Cri de la Prairie is a place for creation, performance, and the most diverse forms of theatre, and it addresses the widest possible audience, especially youth, so that theatre can be a popular tool for individual and collective education.

Robin Renucci's project places the audience at the forefront of intersecting practices: aesthetic, artistic and critical. He promotes a theme of language and breath, in which the actor is the center by combining creation, transmission, training, popular education and artistic education.
