Promenade de la Pantiero

Pantiero

The promenade is located between the Old Port and the Palais des Festivals. The maritime station hosts the customs offices which gives its meaning à the name of the promenade. The name of Pantiero corresponds à a territory subject à the jurisdiction of the customs. It also means: pathway, corridor, exit for the pâtres or customs officers. The area where customs brigades with specific powers are assigned is called the "penthi". This term could derive either from the term bandière (which gave the name of contraband), or from the term pantière, which denotes the net used for hunting the pigeon, a tool for capturing birds used by hunters similar to the surveillance device implemented by customs officers to catch smugglers. The war memorial and the bandstand are registered as historical monuments. The maritime station building, considered representative of the architecture of the Thirty Glorious years, has been awarded the Heritage of the 20th Century label.
