Rue des Deux Empereurs

Rue des deux Empereurs

Napoléon 1st and Napoléon III have Bonifacian origins, as direct descendants of the Cattaccioli, settled in Bonifacio in the late Middle Ages. In Bonifacio, the Cattaccioli have received and hosted in their Palazzo the Emperor Charles V. It was almost believed to be a legend but authentic sources prove this unholy day, in 1541, when the Catholic King's fleet was leaving to attack Algiers. It is true that Corsica was then being disputed between Charles V and the Emperor of the Franks François 1er. Since 1538, the latter had been allied with the Ottoman Emperor, Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, whose allied squadrons came to attack Bastia, Ajaccio, Calvi and Bonifacio (1553).

This street now bears, in honor of the visit of Napoleon I and Charles V, the name of the street of the two Emperors.
