Plaza de la Constitución
La Plaza de la Constitución
The Plaza de la Constitución is a Unesco World Heritage Site, part of which is popularly known as the Zócalo. Together with the streets surrounding its perimeter, it has an approximate area of 46,800 square meters (195 m x 240 m) and is the second largest square in the world. Its name dates back to 1813, in homage to the Spanish Constitution of 1812, known as the Constitución de Cádiz. The term zécalo is related to the Italian zoccolo, which means "pedestal" or "plinth."
Do you know ?
The name Zócalocomes from a base built during the government of Antonio López de Santa Anna. This base was to raise a large column in the center of the square to commemorate the country's independence. The work of Lorenzo de Hidalga never materialized, but the base or zócalo remained for many years.
