Citadelle d'Ajaccio

In 1487 and 1488, the Genoese built a keep at the end of the promontory of the present citadel. The citadel was mainly built between 1554 and 1559 by Marshal de Termes and his successor, Giordano Orsini. The bastioned fronts on the land side were built, the extreme works were connected to the keep and the two curtain walls thus obtained were flanked by two towers known as the Etendard and the Revelan. The whole was then surrounded by a moat connected to the sea. After the departure of the French in 1559, the Genoese, under the direction of the engineer Jacopo Pratino, built a salient in front of the old castle, and the Etendard and Revelan towers were replaced by the redans of Saint John and Saint Matthew. From 1770 to 1829, the French carried out various improvements: substitution of dry ditches for water ditches; construction of the new Bastion (1775). Classified as a historical monument since 1975.
