Place Jean Jaurès
Jean JAURES - Politician
1859 - 1914
Jean Jaurès was born in 1859 à Castres (Tarn). After brilliant studies in philosophy, he taught in Albi and then Toulouse. In 1885, he became the dean of the Tarn. From 1887, he collaborated to the newspaper "La Dépêche". City councilor and then deputy mayor of Toulouse, Jaurès is a connoisseur of the working world and gets closer to the socialist militants. In his articles, Jaurès supports the strike of the miners of Carmaux in 1892. When the Dreyfus affair starts, he commits himself with passion in favor of Dreyfus. The affair brings into play not only an individual injustice, but also the respect of humanity. Jaurès becomes aware of the resistances of capitalist society and the dangers posed by the rise of nationalism and anti-Semitism. The defense of public order becomes its primary objective. Jaur was the head of the French Socialist Party with Edouard Vaillant and supported the participation of the Socialists in the government. Anxious to strengthen public life, Jaurès was one of the fathers of the 1905 law on the separation of church and state. Coming from a Catholic tradition, he defends the idea that the religious beliefs of an individual cannot deprive him of belonging to a community of destiny. He worked for the unity of socialists with the creation of the S.F.I.O. Having become an important political leader, Jaur was to fight against the war during the last years of his life. A supporter of peace in 1914, he tried to influence government policy to avoid war. Because of his pacifist ideas, he was assassinated on July 31, 1914 at the "Café du Croissant" by Raoul Villain. His ashes will be transferred to the Panthéon in 1924.
