Marie François Sadi CARNOT - Politician
1837 - 1894
Sadi Carnot was a French politician, president of the République from 1887 à his death. Before entering politics, he was eacute;nieur des ponts et chaussées. After studying at the Lycée Condorcet, then at the Polytechnique and finally at the Ecole des Ponts et Chaussées (valedictorian of his class in 1863), he became chief engineer in Haute-Savoie. At the same time, he started a career as a high civil servant: he joined the Conseil Supérieur des Ponts et Chausss, and was appointed prefect of the Seine-Maritime. In 1880, he was appointed Minister of Public Works and then Minister of Finance a year later.
The 3rd of December 1880, he was appointed Minister of Public Works
On December 3, 1887, following the dismissal of Jules Grévy, implicated in the scandal known as the deacute;corations, he was elected president of the République. During his mandate, Sadi Carnot had to face the attempted coup d'état led by the extreme right-wing general Boulanger, the political-financial scandal of the Panama Canal, and anarchist agitation. Moreover, he worked in favor of a Franco-Russian rapprochement. After refusing to pardon the anarchist Auguste Vaillant (author of an attack on the Chamber of Deputies), Sadi Carnot became a target in his turn. On June 24, 1894, during the Lyon Exposition, he was victim of a stabbing by the Italian anarchist Sante Caserio. He died the next day as a result of his injuries.
