Lucius CAL
Lucius CAL - Politician
1880 - 1970
Landowner and wine merchant, Lucius Calwas a central figure in Cuges-les-Pins. A socialist (SFIO) activist with a strong heart, his sense of duty left its mark on the post-war period. Although he was tipped to become mayor in 1945, he chose to become first deputy mayor to promote village unity. His great work remains the defense of the local vineyard: he fought relentlessly to obtain VDQS classification, thus guaranteeing the future of cugeois winegrowers.
Three outstanding anecdotes
- The political sacrifice:In 1945, he refused the post of mayor out of pure pragmatism. For him, the harmony of the village was worth more than a title, preferring to work in the shadows as a deputy to rebuild the commune.
The open-air town hall: An active negotiator, he spent more time in the village square than in his office. It was there, between two handshakes, that he settled residents' problems, making this space the true political heart of Cuges.
