Rue Étroite

La rue Etroite

The Rue Etroite runs from Place Sainte-Barbe to Rue du Four Neuf. It was the Rue Droite of early times. In the earliest days of the town, it was known as Rue Longue, because it ran from Sainte-Barbe to the town gate, topped by its bell tower. Here was the beating heart of Auriol, with its small shops and noisy crowd of inhabitants. A sign of all this intense life, you'll find the place where, in 1715, one of Auriol's first four public fountains was built, "aux Pâtisà l’endroit qui conviendra le mieux": this fountain with a small pile and a cannon" was Cachelli's fountain. It adjoined the house of a certain Caillol, nicknamed Cachelli. This central spot was close to the communal oven of the escollo viello (old school).the covered passageway near the fountain provided access to the rue Basse and the place des Pâtis, which was the entrance to the seigniorial auditorium.
Carts and herds used the rue Etroite, taking the Grand chemin via Sainte-Barbe and the Grand’rue. Only those carrying the bât and charretons à arms could pass through.
