Horace SEBASTIANI - Politician
1772 - 1851
Horace François Bastien Sébastiani, Comte de La Porta et de l'Empire, born; à La Porta and died à Paris, was a French military, diplomat and politician. He distinguished himself during the wars of the Empire and was ambassador to Constantinople (1806-1808), before playing a leading political role under the July monarchy, which made him marshal of France, minister of the Navy and the Colonies, and minister of foreign affairs. at the end of his life, he was very affected by a family drama whose repercussion was such that it created one of the main scandals of the July monarchy: the assassination, on August 17, 1847, of his only daughter by her son-in-law, the Duke of Praslin, who committed suicide in prison a few days later. Upset and inconsolable, the husband Séchal Sébastiani languishes for another four years and dies suddenly à age 78.
