Rue Gallieni
Joseph GALLIENI - Military
1849 - 1916
Joseph Gallieni was a French military and colonial administrator. He took an active part in the expansion and consolidation of the colonial empire, especially in Africa. He founded a method that combined brutality, as for example with the massacre of the Menalamba in Madagascar, with economic development after a gradual conquest of the territories. During the First World War, as military governor of Paris, he took the decision to requisition Parisian cabs to bring reinforcements to the battle of the Ourcq. He was posthumously elevated to the rank of Marshal of France in 1921.
