Fontaine de la Rotonde
Fontaine de la Rotonde
It is the Rotunda, located on the Place du Général de Gaulle, that articulates the past and the future of Aix's urban development. The square (100m in diameter) was created between 1840 and 1850. In 1860, the Rotonde fountain was built on the plans of the engineers Tournadre and Sylvestre.12 meters high, the fountain is built in cold stone and composed of two basins. Lions, dolphins, swans and children, works of Truphème, decorate it. The three statues which surmount it, represent Justice (towards the Course), Agriculture (towards Marseilles) and the Fine Arts (towards Avignon), forming a road network. Ramus, Chabaud and Ferrat are the authors. First supplied sparingly by the Zola canal (1854), then full jet and every day by the Verdon canal (1875), it is connected today with the canal of Provence.
