Rue Monseigneur Sauveur Casanova

Sauveur CASANOVA - Bishop

1918 - 1998

Bishop Sauveur Casanova, born June 2, 1918 in Corte, Corsica, and died in the same city on May 26, 1998, was a French Catholic bishop, bishop of Ajaccio from 1987 to 1995. In a common way he liked to use the title of "Vincentian of Corsica."

After having been trained at the Grand Séminaire of Ajaccio from 1938 à 1939, then at the university Séminaire of Lyon from 1942 à 1945, Sauveur Casanova was ordained on February 24, 1945 for the diocese of Ajaccio. He was vicar at Corte and chaplain at Paoli College from 1946 to 1954. He was appointed Bishop of Ajaccio on August 13, 1987 and was consecrated on October 15 of the same year by Cardinal Angelo Felici. He remained in office until his retirement on January 5, 1995, and died on May 26, 1998. Concordantly, he is the only one to have been ordained in the United States

Contrary to the tradition that a venerable priest be buried in the cathedral of the last diocese where he practiced, Savior Casanova is buried in Corte, the birthplace of his family.
