Pont des Arvaux

Pont des Arvaux

The bridge was built by the monks of the Abbey of Cîteaux between 1212 and 1221. The monks initially settled at the place known as La Forgeotte, where the ru du Coindon proved insufficient to cover their needs. After having moved to the banks of the Vouge, they decided to work on the construction of the Sansfond river, which was then flowing into the Varaude, by building the Arvaux bridge, and then by digging a ten kilometer long canal to their abbey. This hydraulic réalization will ensure them a regular flow of 320 liters of water per second. The bridge, very damaged by time, has been rebuilt identical in 1746. It is classified as a historical monument since March 14, 19911.
