La Porte de Champagne

La Porte de Champagne

Following numerous plunders, the canons and inhabitants of Levroux obtained from King Charles VII in 1435 the authorization to fortify the city and to levy a special tax to pay for the expenses. In 1436, three gates protected the city. Only the Champagne Gate remains today, which was the only way out of the city on the Châteauroux side. It also delimited the Boischaud Nord, of which Levroux is a part (breeding land) and the Champagne Berrichonne (cereal land). Traces of the machicolations and loopholes still remain.
