La chapelle des Pénitents bleus

The brotherhoods of penitents are religious associations of laymen, which had a spiritual and social vocation (assistance to the poor, sick, prisoners, burials). Their members wore a specific colored dress to which they owed their name. In L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue there were four brotherhoods of penitents: the white, the blue, the black and the green. In 1565, at the request of several inhabitants of the city, the bishop of Cavaillon authorized the erection of a brotherhood of blue or pers penitents under the title of the "Five Plies of our Redeemer Jesus Christ" in the Franciscan convent located within the city limits. After having occupied several chapels built by them, the blue penitents decided in 1766 to build a new one in the district of Bouïgas, which was devoid of religious buildings. It was built by the architect Jean-Ange Brun between 1766 and 1769.A major witness to the religious architecture of the second half of the 18th century, this chapel, located at the corner of Voltaire and Rose Goudard streets (formerly Saint-Honorat and Arquet streets), it has a remarkable classical facade with sloping sides and a superb plaster ceiling decorated with gypseries, which is a fine example of the religious arts of the Comtadine region in the 18th century, thanks to its sobriety and the occasional use of high-relief motifs in painted plaster (glory enhanced with cherubs, cartouches, etc.).the chapel was sold in 1796 to a man from L'Isle and the brotherhood was dissolved. In the XIXth century, the chapel welcomed the Congregation of Men. The re-establishment of the brotherhood took place in 1834. The 18th century chapel was desecrated in the 1970s. Acquired by private individuals, badly affected by unsightly renovations during the 1970s and 1980s, it was bought by the City at the end of the 1990s. It is currently undergoing an archaeological diagnosis before being opened in the summer of 2017 to host theater groups.
