René CHAR - Writer

1907 - 1988

René Char, born June 14, 1907 in L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, died February 19, 1988 in Paris, is a French poet and resistance fighter. For lovers of poetry: Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is the home of this contemporary poet classified as a surrealist. After studying in Avignon and Aix at the Faculty of Letters, René Char stayed in Tunisia, then took courses in 1923 at the Marseille Business School. During the Second World War he was mobilized as an artilleryman on the Alsace front; after the debacle, he joined the Resistance in the Céreste region (Alpes de Haute-Provence) under the name of Alexandre. He went to Algiers, then returned home to liberate his country. When Char began writing poetry between 1922 and 1926, he had as many bitter enemies as he did loyal friends. This is not surprising: the man who, after having been a decisive member of the Surrealist movement, was one of the most active poets in the Resistance against Nazism, was not a man of compromise. Initially a Surrealist, it was around 1935 that he broke away from this movement. René Char was included in the Bibliothèque de la Pléiade during his lifetime. This is an honor that few writers know. He remained faithful to Isle sur Sorgue where he lived at the "Busclats". After the war he was one of the four founders of the Avignon Festival
