Rue du Chant de Mai
Rue du Chant de Mai
The name of the street of the Chant de Mai remains a mystery and several hypotheses coexist.
Some think that in the past the ânes éwere numerous à Bonifacio and that in the month of May they sang more than usual. Others think that the name comes from a pacific inspiration. In the month of May the workers in the fields were sowing. This custom was called Welcome to May. On this occasion the young bonifaciennes singing in the windows, threw flowers that fell slowly in the street, d’où the name of Song of May.
Finally, Le Champ de Mai is the solemn assembly of the delegates of all the French collélectoral colleges convened;s by Napoléon 1st on the Champ-de-Mars of Paris, during the Hundred Days, to hear the proclamation of the Additional Act to the constitutions of the Empire (June 1, 1815). Knowing the link between Napoléon à Bonifacio, a spelling error is not totally excluded between Champ and Chant.
