Entrée de la citadelle
Haute ville
During the second half of the 13th century, a war between lords led to the building of the upper town of Calvi. In 1278, the town confederated with Genoa, to which it remained steadfastly loyal.
In 1483, the Office of St. George decided to reinforce Calvi's defenses, as the castle of Vecchio Castello was deemed insufficient to protect the presidium. By 1491, the new fortifications were already considered fit for service.
The works were completed in 1545, then consolidated in the face of the Franco-Turkish threat. The walls were completed during the 17th century.
