Fontaine de la Place d'Albertas

The fountain of the Place d’Albertas - a tourist attraction of the first magnitude - has, paradoxically, no history. Or very little. Its metallic ornamentation dates only from 1912 and was melted down and cast by the Arts et Mèves. In fact, it is the square itself that constitutes a striking architectural feature that highlights the circular fountain.the square was built in six years, from 1735 to 1741, by Jean-Baptiste d'Albertas in front of the hotel where he lived, rue Espariat, next to the hotel Boyer d'Eguilles. The square is bordered by small huts illustrating the lord's desire to decorate the entrance to his hut and to give a certain unity to the whole. The beauty of the place is given by a remarkable balance of lines: horizontal lines of the walls of the ground floor and the moldings of the floor, vertical lines of the pilasters framing two floors. Fountain and square, in a choice environment, give a charm that inevitably evokes the gentle way of life of the XVIIIth century.jean-Baptiste d'Albertas, president of the Court of Auditors, was murdered in 1790 by a young man, Anicet Martel, who was condemned to be burned alive and executed on the palace square. His skeleton will be found in the reflection cabinet of a maçonic lodge. The sweetness of life was relative.
