Rue Henry Bennett
Henry BENNETT - Doctor
1816 - 1891
Henry Bennett discovered Menton. He was a doctor specializing in obstetrics member of the Royal College of Physics of London, delivery physician of the Royal Hospital and doctor of medicine of the Faculty of Hospitals of Paris (St. Louis, Pitié and Salpetrière). In 1859-1860 he came to Menton to "die in a quiet corner" at the age of 46. It was love at first sight; not only would he regain his health, but he also became a tireless propagandist, through 10 English, Dutch, German, American and French editions of his "Menton and the Riviera as a winter resort." Result: In 1859, Menton had 3 doctors, in 1874, 17 in winter, in 1897, 26 (including 12 French, 8 English, 1 Dutch, 2 Germans, 1 Russian, 2 Italians). His statue is located in the small square of the former post office (now Agora), at the corner of Partouneaux and Republic streets.
