Chiesa di San Maurizio

Chiesa di San Maurizio

The Church of San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore, known as the "Sistine Chapel of Milan", is one of the city's hidden gems. Built in the 16th century, the church is part of the former Major Monastery of the Benedictines. The building is divided into two parts: one for the faithful and another for the cloistered nuns. The frescoes that entirely cover the walls are the work of Bernardino Luini and his sons.

Did you knows?

  1. During World War II, the church was the only building in the complex to survive the 1943 bombings.

  2. The nuns used a special grate to attend mass without being seen by the faithful.

  3. In the Noah's Ark fresco, Bernardino Luini painted exotic animals he had never seen, based solely on travelers' tales.
