Fontaine Pascal

Rue Van Loo

The Pascal fountain, classified as a historical monument in 1929, is located at the top of Cours Sextius, opposite the rue des Cordeliers which marks the passage into old Aix. A previous fountain was difinished on this site in 1713 but the spring from which it drew water did not provide enough. In times of drought, the population of the area suffered from this lack of water, and epidemics spread. In 1833, in order to put an end to these shortages, the well was drilled deeper. To cushion this new flow of water, a fountain was built after the old one, which recalled difficult times, was removed.

The situation remained unchanged

The situation remained unchanged until 1922 when Sylvain Pascal, a wealthy merchant of the rue des Cordeliers, decided to honor the inhabitants of his neighborhood by offering a fountain symbolizing the beauty and charm of Provence. The monument, designed by the architect Lieutaud and executed by the sculptor Baille, shows, on an urn located at the top, a farandole of 4 young Provencal girls, accompanied on the pedestal by a drummer. On each side of the massif in the center, are represented 2 tetras of a juvenile Bacchus, whose cannons spit water in 2 vast shells. This fountain is directly fed by the water of the thermal baths as well as that of the Cordeliers.
