Rue Hébraïque
Bain rituel Juif
The Jewish community of Cavaillon is part of the Comtadin Jews, present in the Comtat Venaissin since the 14th century. In Cavaillon, the current Hebrew street historically constituted the "quarry", the Jewish district of the town. The ritual bath or Mikvé is located in the courtyard of the Maison Jouve1. The place has been classified as a historical monument since December 17, 2007. Built in the basement, 7 meters under the courtyard of the Jouve house, its plan is L-shaped. It was initially divided into two small vaulted rooms, separated by a wall with a door. A third vaulted room was added later. It is fed by three wells. The bath itself, accessible by an angled staircase, is located to the north of the main room. The current access to the rooms is through a door, under a staircase giving into the courtyard of the Jouve house, since the 19th century. The original access is unknown.
