El Museo Nacional de Arte (MUNAL)
The National Museum of Art (MUNAL) is located in a building in the Manuel Tols square. It houses a collection of Mexican art from the end of the pre-Hispanic era to the beginning of the 20th century. It is of neoclassical and Renaissance style. It was destined to the National Museum of Art in 1982 and restored in 1997. The permanent collection is organized into three major periods that cover and synthesize the history of Mexican art from the mid-sixteenth century to the first part of the twentieth century: assimilation of the West (1550-1821), national construction (1810-1910), plastic strategies for a new nation (1910-1955). An equestrian statue of King Charles IV of Spain adorns the facade of the palace. The statue is known as "El Caballito" and was originally located in the courtyard. México preserves this statue not as a sign of loyalty to a Spanish king, but as a work of art. It was placed in its present location in 1979
