Rue Fontaine de Caylus

Caylus

Several hypotheses have been put forward on the etymology of the name Caylus. A Roman knight, named Caius Lucius would have built a castle in the Tarn-et-Garonne which bears his name. Elsewhere, oral tradition reports that Caylus comes from Caii lux, in reference to fires lit from a tower. Another source indicates that Caylus comes from Castri locus. In fact, Caylus would derive from the Latin form Castluscium, which by successive contractions, becomes Caylus in Roman. From the birth of Massalia, there was in the basket a lot of fresh water under the first dwellings which allowed the population to access the underground water through many wells which we find trace in the names of several streets: street of the Well of the Denier, street of the Grand-Puits and the street "Fountain of Caylus". The ancient city had more than 300 wells within the city walls!
