Pierre-Auguste RENOIR - Painter
1841 -
French painter, father of Jean Renoir, Pierre-Auguste Renoir was one of the great masters of impressionism. Among his works: the "Bal du moulin de la galette" and "La Grenouillère". Pierre-Auguste Renoir, better known as Auguste Renoir, was born on February 25, 1841 in Limoges. A great French figurative painter, he favored portraits and nudes, influenced in particular by the paintings of Eugène Delacroix. Throughout his career, he was also inspired by the works of Raphael, Fragonard, Courbet and Manet. He is one of the greatest representatives of the French Impressionist movement. Auguste Renoir began as an apprentice in a porcelain workshop. Then in 1862 he entered the Paris School of Fine Arts, where he rubbed shoulders with such great names as Monet, Bazille and Sisley, with whom he became friends. From the end of the 1860s, Auguste Renoir regularly painted outdoors in the forest of Fontainebleau. This habit particularly marked his style and his subjects. He died on December 3, 1919 in Cagnes-sur-Mer. He continued to paint until the end. We owe him about six thousand paintings including "Les Grandes Baigneuses" and "Jeunes Filles au piano".
