Avenue des Spélugues

Spélugues

The Plateau des Spélugues (the "Caves") is the parcel of land renamed Monte Carlo on July 1, 1866, and on which the Monte Carlo Casino was built. The Grotte des Spélugues is the main troglodyte site in the region. In 1890, during the construction of the railway junction linking France to Italy via Monaco, a cave was discovered 8 metres above the railway line, and particularly below the Villa Auguste. The cave was named Grotte des Spélugues, and its study was entrusted to Émile Rivière (father of speleology) in 1896.
