Éguzon-Chantôme

Le Château d'Eguzon

Built probably in the XIIth century, the castle of Eacutezza rose in the center of an enclosure with towers, a main gate with drawbridge, the whole surrounded by wide ditches of about ten meters. Until the end of the 16th century, several families lived in the castle, in particular the de Brosse family and then the Gaucourt family. It was in 1563, through an alliance between the daughter of Hélion de Rance and Gaspard Foucaud, lord of Saint-Germain-Beaupré, that the estate passed into the hands of the leader of the Huguenots of the Marche.

The current residence was built à the end of the XVIIème siècle and remodeled by the successive owners in the course of the XVIIème and XIXème siècles. At the end of the XVIIIth century we find Martial Morel de Fromental, who lost the property to Mr. Robin de Scacute;volle. The latter sold the property in 1822 to Joseph Delacou, who became mayor of Eacute;guzon. His grandchildren Huard du Plessis in turn sold the property at the very end of the XIXth century.

At the end of the XIXth century, the property was sold to a new owner

At the end of the century, all that remained of the castle were ruined walls and ivy-covered towers, the circular ditch still visible. Only one tower had survived the ravages of time; of medium height, it was covered with a round wooden roof. In 1976, a restoration campaign was undertaken on the outer enclosure and currently most of the walls, the tower bases and the main gate, well restored, allow to imagine what was the castle of Éguzon.
