Rue Hébraïque
Synagogue
The synagogue of Cavaillon, located in rue Hebraïque, is one of the oldest French synagogues. It was built by the Jews of Cavaillon at the end of the Middle Ages in the fifteenth century, the Jews having obtained permission from the bishop of Cavaillon to build it in 1494. It is perhaps on the substructions of this first building that the reconstruction of the eighteenth century takes place, whose community takes the decision in the fall of 1771. The synagogue was rebuilt between 1772 and 1774, as evidenced by the set of bills of sale and receipts which allow one to follow the stages of its reconstruction very precisely.
