Place d'Amont
Place d’Amont
The portalet on Place d’Amont leads to Rue Sainte-Croix and the Gorgues district. The word portalet, comes from the Provencal pourtalet. It refers to the passageway between two streets, or between a street and a public square, as is the case here. Place d’Amont was formerly known as Paty d’Amoun. It was also known as Place de Daou (Place d’En-Haut). These various names helped to distinguish it from the Paty d’Abas (Place d’En-Bas), today's rue Augustine Dupuy. In the Portalet hole, you can see an imposing building. Under the Ancien Régime, this was the Maison du Quinzain, where the quinzain, the unpopular communal tax on rents, was collected. The Maison du Quinzain became a notary's office in the modern era.la Place d’Amont has always had a life of its own. It had its own baker and shoemaker. It had its santonni. Peasant families lived here, as evidenced by the sheds that have now been converted into garages. It was a place of passage and meeting place for the inhabitants of the Quartier-Haut.
