La Collégiale Saint Sylvain

La Collégiale Saint Sylvain

In the 13th century, Lord Eudes de Déols ordered its construction on the ruins of the old church and founded a college of canons. The work began in 1202. When the work was completed in 1280, King Philippe le Hardi (son of Saint Louis) attended mass with the queen and their children. Why the name of St Sylvain? In the 1st century, St Peter sent Sylvain and Sylvestre to evangelize Berry accompanied by Rodène, a young girl of the Roman nobility. The latter left her fiancé, the officer Corusculus, a pagan, to follow Saint Sylvain and Saint Sylvestre to Gabatum (former name of Levroux). She converted to Christianity and mutilated her face to escape Corusculus who came to find her. Saint Sylvain healed her burns and gave her back her beauty. The miracle noted, Corusculus immediately asked for baptism. The legend of the "Fire of Saint Sylvain" which cured skin diseases (like leprosy) was born.
