Cathédrale Saint Jean-Baptiste
Haute ville
La Pro-cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste was, from 1625, the residence of the Bishop of Sagone. The original church, of which only a few elements remain, dates back to the early Renaissance. It was destroyed several times: in 1555, during the siege of the town by the French allied with the Turks, whose fleets bombarded the citadel; then in 1567, when lightning struck the citadel's gunpowder stores, causing an explosion that destroyed the church.
Reconstruction work began around 1600, but, for lack of resources, the choir was not completed until 1628. The rest of the building was not completed until 1747. In 1576, Pope Gregory XIII erected the Church of St. John the Baptist as a cathedral.
The loggia and interior decor of the church are protected; the building is listed as a Monument Historique. It contains some remarkable ancient works of art.
