Rue Saint-Charles

Maison Bonaparte

The construction of the house dates back to the beginning of the 17th century. At that time it had two floors. When Napoleon was born, the building had three floors. Charles Bonaparte, Napoleon's father, built a terrace in 1774. On the ground floor, the vestibule with stairs gives access to the upper floors. There is also a kitchen, cellars, storerooms and rooms for storage. The first floor includes a lounge, a dining room, Charles Bonaparte's study and the room where Napoleon was born. A gallery lit by six windows on the street and six windows and doors with balconies open onto the terrace which is level with the first floor. The gallery gives access to the smoking room, a bedroom and a room used as a study or toilet. The last two floors have the same distribution and included bedrooms. During Napoleon's childhood, the family occupied the first two floors. The furniture of the house seems to have been partly renewed by Joseph Bonaparte when he returned from Italy as commissioner of wars. Classified as a historical monument since 1924.
