Denis-Jean CLERGUE - Curator

1906 - 1981

From 1946, the curator of the castle of Cagnes-sur-Mer, Denis-Jean Clergue (1906-1981) undertook to safeguard the memory of an activity that was beginning to disappear. He therefore collected all the regional objects related to the production of olives and oil and documented the manufacturing techniques through photographic campaigns and interviews with the men and women of the olive growing world. Five rooms on the first floor of the castle present the results of this meticulous work. Rare or common, rustic or sophisticated objects are exposed and explained by didactic panels written from the collected testimonies. The centerpiece of this collection is the reconstitution of a "blood mill" thanks to various private donations, including that of Léonard André-Bonnet (1879-1964). This collection, oriented towards agricultural activity, was later diversified to include art and craft objects made of olive wood.
