Their story.
Stanislas Pierre Nolasque Torrents y de Amat, born May 23, 1839 in Marseille, and died November 6, 1916 in Cannes, was a French painter. Born in Marseille, the eighth child of a rich Spanish immigrant family, Stanislas Torrents attended a drawing school from 1851 to 1856. He continued his training in Barcelona and then went to Paris in 1861 where he was introduced to painting in the studio of Thomas Couture. At the same time, he studied the illustrious masters in museums, particularly Diego Velasquez, whose influence he felt. In 1866, he obtained a pension from the Barcelona School of Fine Arts and went to Rome from 1868 to 1871. Back in Marseille in 1873, he became the favourite painter of Jules Cantini and Jules Charles-Roux. He only exhibited on rare occasions. After several stays in Paris and Spain, he returned to Marseille around 1885. In 1904 he retired to Cannes where he died on November 6, 1916. In 1919, his son Pierre bequeathed 262 paintings to the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Marseille.
