Place du Marché
Place du marché
This large square became the main square of the town from the 15th century onwards. Some old houses testify to this golden age which saw the beginning of the industrial and commercial development of La Châtre. On Rue du Marché, the half-timbered house, which dates from the 15th century, was in the 19th century the home of Sylvain Chicot, from whom George Sand bought candles, wax and tobacco. The house known as "pointue" which also dates from the 15th century, gives its medieval character to the small street which borders it. Jules Sandeau (writer and lover of George Sand), lived on the edge of this square between 1818 and 1832. It inspired his pseudonym, directly taken from the name Sandeau.
