Place Laisnel de la Salle
Maison de bois
Formerly known as the "Place du Pavé", this small square now bears the name of Laisnel de la Salle (1801-1871), deputy mayor of La Châtre, author of Croyances et Légendes du Centre de la France and friend of George Sand. This square shelters an old house of La Châtre: "la Maison de Bois" from the 15th century. It was built by a rich merchant family and shows beautiful half-timbering and a magnificent old studded door with a sculpted brace. The red color dates from its restoration in the 19th century. George Sand evokes this "red house" in her novel André. She had her heroine, a florist named Geneviève, live there.
