Rue des Teinturiers
Rue des teinturiers
The textile industry was present along the Vaucluse canal from the Renaissance to the end of the 19th century. In the past, more than 20 paddlewheels marked out the canal; today, four remain. One must imagine the city crossed by the Sorguette, bathing the walls of the old enclosure where shrubs and aquatic plants grew on the banks. It is said that the rue Banasterie was the place where "banastes", wicker baskets gathered on these banks, were made. It is also necessary to imagine the stench that these waters exhaled in which all the pollutions linked to the industry and the inhabitants were discharged, and that the successive municipalities tried to eliminate. From the beginning of the 19th century, the canals and sorgues disappeared little by little under the roofing slabs, only the Rue des Roues evokes the memory of them.
