Place de la Porte d'Arles
Le Portail d'Arles
The Portal of Arles was built between 1771 and 1773 on the site of the old gate of the collapsed ramparts. The Portal of Arles was built by the master masons Jean Tabusteau of Istres and François Peytrau of St Mitre with stones from a local quarry. Slightly concave in shape, its front face is decorated with two flowery garlands. The arch rests on two pilasters and its keystone is decorated with a Louis XV style coat of arms. A large cornice runs along the upper part of the monument.
