Avenue Antoine Serafini

Antoine SERAFINI - Politician

1900 - 1964

Antoine Sérafini, deputy for the Ajaccio-Calvi constituency and mayor of Ajaccio, died at the age of 64 in Ajaccio. A departmental architect, Antoine Sérafini was an activist in the Resistance. During the war he was arrested and deported to Italy. In 1947 he was elected as a municipal councillor on the Bonapartist list and in 1949 he succeeded Mr Stéphanopoli de Comnène at the head of the Ajaccio municipality. In 1951 he became general councillor of Ajaccio and R.P.F. deputy of Corsica. A coalition of radicals, communists and a fraction of bonapartists triumphed in the 1953 municipal elections. Three years later, in 1956, Mr. Sérafini was defeated in the legislative elections. However, he returned to the forefront of the Corsican political scene in 1959. The Bonapartist list he led was elected, and he became mayor of Ajaccio again. In November 1962, he regained his seat as a deputy and joined the U.N.R. group. Antoine Sérafini was committed to making Ajaccio a modern city. His work is considerable both in the field of administration and town planning.
